A digital home for Fremantle's creative heart

CLIENT Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre

Where art meets everyone.

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre has been the beating heart of Freo’s creative community since 1973, running everything from ceramics workshops and live music to major exhibitions and artist residencies out of one of the most iconic heritage buildings in the country.

When WFAC launched a new brand identity built around the idea that art is for everyone, they needed a website that could carry that same energy. We designed and built the digital experience from the ground up – dissolving scroll transitions, responsive hover states, and dynamic sliders that give the program real movement and presence on screen. But the deeper challenge was structural. WFAC runs over 150 workshops per term across adults and kids, alongside exhibitions, concerts, a shop, residencies, and Moores Building Art Space. The old site buried all of it behind a backend that was nearly impossible for their internal team to manage. We rebuilt the navigation around a scalable menu and dynamic filtering system so visitors can actually find what they’re looking for – by discipline, age group, duration, or availability – and gave WFAC’s internal team a custom WordPress backend they can update without needing a developer in the room.

We also ran a series of WFAC’s existing imagery through AI enhancement, transforming older photos (originally captured on Androids & Phones) into professional, cinematic-quality visuals that sit properly alongside the new brand. Our relationship with WFAC is ongoing – we provide continuous web support and are currently delivering SEO work alongside their internal team to grow the site’s organic visibility and keep things moving forward.

This is one of those projects where the work matters beyond the brief. WFAC is a WA institution and the kind of place that makes Fremantle what it is. We’re proud to be part of keeping it front and centre.

PROBLEMS
SOLUTIONS
Problem
A new brand with no website to match
WFAC's rebrand brought a clear, considered new identity - but the website hadn't moved with it. Visually or structurally, the two were disconnected.
SOLUTION
A visual language built for the screen
We introduced motion, fluid transitions, and a typographic system that translates WFAC's new brand into a digital experience - without losing the warmth and openness of the place itself.
Problem
150+ workshops a term, buried in listings
Adults, kids, beginners, and regulars were all navigating the same unstructured course pages with inconsistent filtering.
SOLUTION
Clear pathways
We built separate flows for adults and kids, and a filtering system covering category, age group, duration, and sold-out status.
Problem
Program wasn't given the room it deserved
Exhibitions, live music, and community events - some of WFAC's most visible activity - were underserved by the old site structure and hard to discover.
SOLUTION
Smarter filtering system
Across program and art class pages, visitors can now narrow by discipline, skill level, genre, category, time, duration, and venue - surfacing the right content quickly.
Problem
Multiple departments, one site only some could update
Learning, events, marketing, and the shop all moved at different speeds. Content bottlenecks meant delays, workarounds, and frustration across the team.
SOLUTION
A CMS built for the whole team
A modular WordPress backend gives every department the ability to publish, update, and manage their own content independently - no developer required.
Problem
Gift cards with no way to redeem them online
WFAC had a significant number of gift vouchers in circulation with no online redemption path, creating friction for customers and manual work for staff.
SOLUTION
Online redemption via Lightspeed integration
We connected the gift card system to WFAC's Lightspeed POS, making vouchers redeemable online for the first time.
